2016 M.B.A. Finalist – Alterations and Additions up to $150,000

With a growing collection of books gathered through two lifetimes of academia, the clients asked Sertorio Homes to turn their fibro-and-iron shed into a detached study, bathroom and a single lock-up garage with additional storage in the roof space. Mindful of the site condition (a character home, a mature tree and limited outdoor open space), we designed the studio around the tree, forming an intimate courtyard between the new studio and existing house. Architecturally, the detailing of the gable end treatment, exposed rafter ends, timber joinery and rendered window sill make reference to the original home, and the ridge height is lowered slightly to prevent the new addition from being too dominant in its much older setting.
